How long do budgies live?
This guide summarises reported budgie lifespans in the wild and in captivity, and explains why the figures should be treated as rough guides rather than exact predictions.
Reported lifespan ranges
The Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA), in its July 2023 Budgie Lifespan information, says budgies in the wild usually live for about 5 to 8 years. The wording is approximate: it describes a usual range, not a fixed lifespan for every wild budgie.
For budgies in captivity, BCSA gives a figure of 10 to 15 years with proper care. This is also a range rather than a promise that an individual bird will live to a particular age. The source does not give a more precise estimate for a specific bird.
Why figures differ
Other sources give different ranges, so lifespan figures should be read as rough guides. A number from one source may not match a number from another; the available facts do not explain the reasons for those differences.
BCSA also reports that the oldest recorded budgie, named Charlie, reportedly lived to be 29 years old. This is an exceptional recorded figure, not the usual range given for wild or captive budgies, and the source presents it as a report.
Using the estimates
The wild and captive figures describe different settings, so keep their context in mind when comparing them. The 5-to-8-year range applies to budgies in the wild; the 10-to-15-year range is for budgies in captivity with proper care.
These estimates offer broad context, not a precise prediction for an individual budgie. If a question about a bird's lifespan involves its health, behaviour change or diet, see an avian vet.
